Shaving for Sharity: The Hospice at Home Programme

or Charity… OK I tried to do a little literation but I ended up in bastardising HM Queen’s english.

Update 15th October 2005: We have a female volunteer to shave her head too!

But the story that needs to be told is an initiative started of by my friend Peter Tan.

He has started a campaign to collect RM5,000.00 to aid the Hospice-at-Home Donation Programme under the National Cancer Society of Malaysia, Penang Branch.

Peter, Jason, Bryan and myself have pledged to shave our heads if the campaign is succesful in raising the RM5,000.00.

Well maybe me shaving my head is no big deal since you may think that my hair has a no.1 mamak cut/shave rating but mind you I have not been to the baber’s in 5 weeks due to the accident.

So there will be a big difference after all. Peter’s hair on the other hand, is long. And he has been keeping it for almost 4 years!!!

Peter's hair ready to be chopped off...

As you can see, it is a huge sacrifice but it is worth it for Peter:

“This is removing forty two months worth of uncut hair from my scalp. I have invariably grown attached to them after so many years. It has become part of me, a distinct identity that I have come to be associated with. However, this is all for a cause that I strongly believe in. It is worth the sacrifice.

It costs RM31 for a palliative care nurse from the Hospice to visit a patient at home. The RM5,000.00 will be able to support 161 home visits. This is only a fraction of the RM290,000.00 that was spent in the year 2004 for such visits. Patients are not charged for these visits and neither are they obliged to reciprocate in any other way. This is truly service from the heart, and one of the great examples of human compassion at its best.”

So what are you waiting for guys and gals let’s make this campaign a succesful one! Don’t forget that once you’ve pledged or donated pls let me and Peter know (sharizal[at]sharizal[dot]net and mail[at]petertan[dot]com respectively) so we can update the pledges and donations list…

You can find information to donate here. You can succesfully donate through Maybank2U as I have by adding the Society Registry No of 120.

  6. [...] Sharizal of Les Perceptions Perpétuellement Permutantes has pledged to shave his head along with the three of us. I did not even have to ask him. He volunteered while we were chatting in Yahoo Messenger after he had transferred his pledge into the Penang Hospice’s bank account. His entry titled Shaving for Sharity: The Hospice at Home Programme says it all. That makes four of us. I hope more bloggers will join us in this worthy endeavour. [...]

  13. [...] Three other bloggers have decided to shave it all alongside Peter for this worthy cause. By the end of October if the donation gets up to RM5,000, buangmasa.net, Bryan and Sharizal will also sport the Yul Brynner look, albeit not as sexy but still distinctive. [...]
