MAN+GOD – 3 YEARS ON THE ROAD

Man + God is a ‘Designers’ Poster Art’ series of non-religious design collaborations with artists/ designers from Africa, Austria, Brazil, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, The Netherlands, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States.
This exhibition is dedicated to explore the relationship between man and god from a different perspective- through the eyes and ideas of designers around the world. Successfully launched at the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, back in April 2003, Man + God has so far traveled to Penang, Singapore, New York, Stuttgart Germany and now back to Kuala Lumpur. This up-dated sequel will be exhibited till 30th June, 2006; a series of talks conducted by international and local guest speakers, installations and other art paraphernalia promotions. These activities aspire to reach a wide audience in Malaysia, particularly the students and designers of the new generation. Participating in this art event will gives our young talents an opportunity and privileged to see the works from top notch worldwide designers as well as to learn from them.

There will also be a series of design dialogues held during the exhibition period. Titled ‘On the road and back home: visual experiences’, the dialogues gather designers and artists from Amsterdam, France, Kuala Lumpur, New York and Singapore to discuss their experiences as visual communicators in their respective disciplines. SPEAKERS
Joseph FooHaving worked in the United States and Singapore, Joseph co-founded Trinity (3nity) with two other partners in 1996. Today a multi-disciplinary brand identity consultancy, 3nity creates, executes and manages brand and communication strategies across various media for a broad spectrum of clients in Asia and Europe.
Joseph’s work has been rewarded in both local and international competitions – the Hong Kong International Poster Triennial, HKDA Excellence Awards, and the Singapore Design Awards being some of the latest. He is also actively involved as speaker and panelist in design seminars, workshops and dialogues in and out of Malaysia. He recently spoke at the Asia Business Forum (Kuala Lumpur), Branding In Asia (Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Jakarta), Face to Face 2005 (Stuttgart) and International Design/Education Forum (Beijing).
Pursuing his interest in exploring Asian thoughts and identity through graphic design has led to the inception of Art4Soul, a division of 3nity that produces more altruistic work. Among Art4Soul’s recent initiatives are Man + God, God Loves Gay & Gay Loves God, and The Ghost That Is Always Hungry.
He guest lectures at The One Academy, a leading art & design college in Kuala Lumpur. Beyond Malaysia, he teaches and conducts workshops at Beijing’s Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) yearly and had spoken at Rangsit University (Bangkok), Temasek Polytechnic (Singapore), Ning Bo University (China), and Tong Ji University (Shanghai).
Joseph has been featured in numerous local and overseas publications including World Graphic Design (New York/London), etapes (Paris), Design Week (Seoul), The Business Times and Zhao Bao (Singapore) and Malaysia’s very own Star, The Edge and Adoi, to name a few.
Yap Sau Bin (b. 1974 KL)Yap has a background in Fine Arts from the U.K. He teaches art and media related subjects at the Multimedia University and is a member of the artist initiative Rumah Air Panas. His art practice revolves mainly around conceptual and installation work; and has participated in projects and shows in Cuba, Germany, Malaysia and Singapore.
Jackson Tan

Jackson Tan is a co-founder of Black Design, a multi-disciplinary creative communications agency. With its holistic approach to creative briefs, He has worked with clients such as MTV Asia, DesignSingapore Council, Discovery Channel, Mod Living, Sony Ericsson, Daimler Chrysler and Nike in creative areas that include branding, advertising, motion graphics, interactive and guerilla marketing. His works have won recognition in international creative award shows such as the British D&AD, American Center of Design 100 Show, Promax Asia, Asia Media Design Awards and The One Show.
He was invited and commissioned by DesignSingapore (MICA) in April 2005 to conceptualise, curate and design the highly successful landmark exhibition called 20/20. It is a show case of 20 of Singapore’s finest creative talents and charts the paradigm shifts that has occurred within Singapore’s creative landscape.

He is also a partner of Phunk Studio, a creative collective in Singapore. Described by UK’s best selling design magazine, Creative Review as “The Champion of Singapore’s Graphic Scene”. Computer Arts magazine wrote that “The rise of :phunk has been so meteoric that the entire Singaporean design scene has grown exponentially with it” and described by Icon magazine as “Singapore’s most important design collective”
They have propagated a visual signature that seamlessly blends their diverse influences into a singular creative thought that never fails to revive itself in the ever-fleeting world of art, design and culture. Their cross-disciplinary approach is best described as “an aesthetic collective consciousness” focused on experimenting with new approaches to visual expressions.
They have exhibited and lectured in New York, London, Sydney, Berlin, Valencia, Shanghai, Taipei, Ecuador, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Phunk has been featured in numerous international books and magazines such as I.D. (International Design), Tokion, XLR8R, Studio Voice, +81, Mass Appeal, IDN, Black + White, Art & Design, Vogue, ICON and Soma
Their inaugural exhibition in New York City, titled ‘Control Chaos’ (2003) was a runaway success, with long queues forming outside The Reed Space gallery hours before the launch. All the works exhibited were sold out before the end of the exhibition. The exhibition has since been launched successfully in Australia, Spain and Singapore.
Phunk was nominated and awarded the winners of The Singapore Style Awards 2004 in the visual arts category as well as the Grand Award Winners. The award is presented to the individuals that are most influential and inspirational in pushing the boundaries of Singapore’s Fashion, Music and Popular Culture.
Phunk was invited by the Singapore History Museum in 2005 to present it’s 10 year retrospective exhibition titled, ‘Decade of Decadence’. They also represented Singapore at the recent Gwangju Design Biennial 2005 in Korea.
An avid typophile, some of Jackson’s original digital typeface designs are currently distributed worldwide by Garage Fonts, USA.

Born in the virgin jungles of Sabah, he’s fond of telling his colleages that Sabahans have birdnest and lobster for tea breaks. Worked 6 years and 2 months in 3nity so far.
Lee Swee Keong
A Fine Art graduate interested in movement, Keong has studied contemporary dance, ballet, Butoh, tai qi, qigong and yoga. He has appeared in diverse dance, theatre, film and experimental productions as a movement artist. In 1995 he co-founded Nyoba & Dancers with Ng Mei Yin and Loi Chin Yu. In 2003, this was changed to Nyoba Dance+ to reflect changes in the company’s line-up and artistic direction. Keong is a contemporary theatre radical whose work and initiatives stand out against his Malaysian counterparts. Exploring alternative thought and drawing on his training in various art disciplines, his works have taken on a distinctive edgy, avant-garde style.
Caecar Chong
Although a trained architect, Caecar believes architecture is more than just building buildings. In association with Space Spirit Studio, he champions the use of various media across art disciplines to express the spirit of space. His set designs for theatre and dance have respectively won and been nominated for a Cameronian Arts Award.
